چکیده

The cells of the green unicellular alga Scenedesmus incrassatulus Böhl, strain R-83 released organic chelators for Fe(III) in inorganic nutrient medium both in iron-deficient and in iron-replete conditions. Iron-deficient cells released chelators capable to bind 11nmol Fe. mg (cell DW)–1.h–1, while the chelators released from iron-sufficient cells after contact with Fe(III) were sufficient to bind 1nmol Fe. (mg cell DW)–1.s–1. A perfect correlation existed between the capacity of humic complexes of Fe(III) to catalyze lipid peroxidation in lipid-containing extracts in vitro, and their capacity to trigger the release of organic chelators from cells in vivo. Chelator release was stimulated by oxygen and was blocked by DCMU in the dark. Inorganic Fe(II) induced fivefold lower chelator release than inorganic Fe(III). Fe(III)-induced release of chelators was also registered in seven algal strains (Chlorella, Scenedesmus, Porphyridium) and in two cyanobacterial strains: Arthronema (Plectonema) and Arthrospira (Spirulina).

Melanin production and use as a soluble electron shuttle for Fe(III) oxide reduction and as a terminal electron acceptor by Shewanella algae BrY.

Dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) utilize numerous compounds as terminal electron acceptors, including insoluble iron oxides. The mechanism(s) of insoluble-mineral reduction by DMRB is not well understood. Here we report that extracellular melanin is produced by Shewanella algae BrY. The extracted melanin served as the sole terminal electron acceptor. Upon reduction the reduced, solu...

Effects of nitrate, phosphate and iron on the growth of macroalgae and benthic cyanobacteria from Cocos Lagoon, Guam

The observed high abundance of algae and cyanobacteria on Guam’s coral reefs raises concern regarding a possible shift from coralto algal-dominated communities. Possible increased nutrient supply to macroalgae and cyanobacteria via the watershed due to anthropogenic disturbance could be a partial cause. In this study, 2 outdoor microcosm experiments are used to test the effects of iron, nitrate...

Biogenic Weathering: Solubilization of Iron from Minerals by Epilithic Freshwater Algae and Cyanobacteria

A sandstone outcrop exposed to freshwater seepage supports a diverse assemblage of photosynthetic microbes. Dominant taxa are two cyanophytes (Oscillatoria sp., Rivularia sp.) and a unicellular green alga (Palmellococcus sp.). Less abundant taxa include a filamentous green alga, Microspora, and the desmid Cosmarium. Biologic activity is evidenced by measured levels of chlorophyll and lipids. Bi...

Release of weak and strong copper-complexing agents by algae1

By means of potentiometric titrations, the copper-complcxing properties of organic compounds released by 21 algal species are characterized. Most eucaryotic species relcascd measurablc amounts (lo-” M) of copper-complexing agents that could be modeled as weak organic acids with log{*&.,,,} = 0.5. Of seven blue-green algal species studied, four produced about 5 x lo+ M concentrations of strong c...

Characteristics and Reactivity of Algae-Produced Dissolved Organic Carbon

Algae green, blue–green, and diatom grown in inorganic media produced particulate and dissolved organic carbon DOC . DOC produced by a green-alga contains 25% hydrophobic acids. DOC from all algae had specific ultraviolet absorbance values less than 2.0 m−1 mg/L −1. Algae-produced DOC was biologically labile; greater than 60% degraded in bioreactors within 5 days. The biodegradable material lik...
